foo Fighters Set the Stage Alight with Arena Anthems
Foo Fighters returned to Christchurch in January 2024 with a stadium show that proved, once again, why they’re one of the most enduring live acts in rock music. Performing under a clear summer sky at Apollo Projects Stadium, Dave Grohl and the band delivered a mammoth two-and-a-half-hour set packed with hits, humour, and heartfelt moments.
The energy was palpable from the first chords of “All My Life,” with the crowd erupting into movement and never letting up. From the anthemic “The Pretender” to the soaring chorus of “Learn to Fly,” every song hit with full force, powered by Grohl’s unmistakable growl and the band’s tight musicianship.

There were quieter moments too - “Aurora” was performed in tribute to late drummer Taylor Hawkins, with Grohl visibly emotional as the band and crowd honoured his memory together. New drummer Josh Freese slotted in seamlessly, keeping the engine room solid without missing a beat.
Grohl was in classic form, chatting between songs, telling stories, and bringing a unique personal energy to the massive stadium crowd. The band made the space feel intimate, even as tens of thousands sang along to “My Hero,” “Best of You,” and set closer “Everlong.”
Support came from Auckland punk outfit Dick Move, who brought punch and energy to their early set, and alternative legends The Breeders, who held their own with a polished, nostalgic performance.
For many, this was more than just a gig—it was a long-awaited return, a celebration of music, and a reminder that Foo Fighters remain a force of nature on stage. Christchurch turned out in full voice, and the band gave them a night to remember.
