Hozier Charms with Soul, Storytelling & Grace

Hozier returned to Christchurch in 2024 with a mesmerising performance at a sold-out Wolfbrook Arena — his first visit to the city in five years. Touring his latest album Unreal Unearth, the Irish singer-songwriter captivated the crowd from the opening notes of “De Selby (Part 2),” immediately drawing everyone into his atmospheric world of poetry, soul, and sound.

Backed by a faultless seven-piece band, Hozier effortlessly moved through his set with emotional range and vocal power. Highlights included the soaring “Movement,” the bluesy groove of “Jackie and Wilson,” and the tender stillness of “Cherry Wine,” which saw the arena fall into hushed silence.

New tracks like “Francesca” and “Eat Your Young” translated beautifully live, met with the same warmth and energy as older favourites. His stage presence - gentle but commanding — carried an understated charisma, letting the music speak loudest.

The show ended on a high with “Take Me to Church,” a euphoric finale that had the entire crowd singing word for word. Hozier’s Christchurch set wasn’t just a concert - it was a masterclass in connection, musicianship, and storytelling.
